it wasn't often that he found himself doing fieldwork that wasn't reactionary to a crime, but the change of pace was pleasant. the moon illuminated the alleyway enough for them to see the van and the goons loading tranquilized, netted pokemon into it. their position was favorable, sitting in his car for a classic stakeout.[break][break]

"a little cliche, but it's nice to see that the criminal mainstays never change." nighttime, van, alleyway. he should've been playing bingo. he snapped another photo with his camera, though it was an open and shut case the second the van had arrived on scene.[break][break]

"whenever you're ready," he offered his colleague, though at the sight of a pidgey with an awkwardly-angled wing from fighting against its capture, he was certain lam wouldn't wait another second.

He couldn’t say he was pleased to find out that there was a poaching ring operating in the city right under his nose, but he’d certainly make sure the measures to shut the whole thing down were enacted. Even if that meant pitching in on a stake out. Had he ever done an actual stake out before? Lam actually didn’t think he had.[break][break]
The gym leader shifted in his seat, antsier than his usual, easygoing nature usually gave away. “If anything, that should make things go smoothly, yeah?” If they knew what to expect, that was. He was a bit more eager to get moving than Haoyu was, but he waited—allowing the fire warden to take as many photos as needed. The more evidence, the better.[break][break]
Until the Pidgey.[break][break]
“Yep, time to go,” he replied swiftly, big bleeding heart that he was. But rather than bust out of the car and charge in, he popped the door handle quietly and slipped out, expecting his companion to do the same.

haoyu was ready to bust the windows out the car with the speed they left, but he saw lam's calm - that which predated a storm - and followed suit. if this were a movie, it'd be a lackluster beginning to an action scene, but haoyu imagined this is where the music would start playing. and as the duo approached quietly, the music would threaten to swell...[break][break]

the goon slammed the van door shut without any fanfare. he turned back to the mouth of the alley to find haoyu's extended arm, giving his silicobra a launching point as she slithered to his hand and tossed herself at the guy, wrapping around him and taking him to the ground. [break][break]

the grunt that was in the middle of settling into the driver's seat flew out, grabbing a butterfly knife from his pocket. as he charged forward, he tossed a pokeball at them and released a lickitung. haoyu's imagined movie soundtrack paused with a record-scratch. "a lickitung? hardly a rocket-associated pokemon."

It probably would’ve been way more badass if they’d just sprung onto the scene, metaphorical guns blazing. He could acknowledge that now, as they crept up to the van rather than feeding into the impulse. Still, this would probably earn them more success in the long run. His glance darted toward Haoyu, and he set loose his own psyduck who toddled after the snack. Albeit she probably looked a bit doofy.[break][break]
But the lickitung that sprang out as the grunts scrambled sort of really outclassed her in that arena.[break][break]
“I know, right? Sort of… disappointing.” His nose wrinkled. Granted, they probably shouldn’t have been underestimating the large, pink creature. Especially as its long tongue unrolled from its mouth like a fruit roll-up. It lumbered forward, intent on giving the silicobra a big LICK so that it would freeze up and release the grunt.[break][break]
“Peaches, focus!” Lam called out from where he’d busied himself in trying to untangle the poor little pidgey–looking back over his shoulder at the psyduck. It seemed that she had been equally as stunned as Haoyu by the choice to set a lickitung after them. But she shook her head with a flurried Psssssyyy and shot a jet of water at it, successfully SOAKING it, though it seemed to do little else but give the lickitung baffled pause.[break][break]
At least, it was an appearance of uselessness.

lam's psyduck protected silicobra from a lick, giving haoyu a moment to consider fully incapacitating the grunt silicobra was wrapped around. "slam him," he instructed, and the silicobra slammed her constrained prey hard into the ground.[break][break]

meanwhile, the upright goon who'd released the lickitung charged haoyu and tackled him to the ground. [break][break]

it knocked the breath from haoyu, though his silicobra acted fast. she had to choose between knocking down the lickitung or getting haoyu free from the grunt, and she prioritized his safety, glaring at the man wrestling haoyu until he froze up, petrified. "messier than i expected," haoyu grunted, pushing the grunt off of himself only to rise to his feet and see the lickitung charging with a zen headbutt.

“Keep at the lickitung!” The large, pink creature had swiveled–shaking off the spray of water, unknowing of the fact that Peaches had temporarily shifted its typing. It stared her down, tongue threatening to unfurl again to LICK her instead. Something that the psyduck was very much opposed to. PSSSYYY… her exasperated honk sounded as she waddled backward, head lolling side to side as her flippers rose to press at her temples.[break][break]
The headache from channeling her abilities came on quickly–sound and cerebral energy reverberating from her to the lickitung with a shared SYNCHRONOISE that went imperceptible to everyone else. The lickitung staggered, bellowing as it took a hefty dose of psychic damage.[break][break]
“You good?” Lam asked as he made his way over to where Haoyu was pushing himself up. Stooping down, he rolled the stunned grunt over so that he could secure his arms behind his back. “They definitely aren’t on their A-game, if that’s what you mean,” he remarked as he looked down.[break][break]
It was likely due to the tumult in the region. Both sides were scrambling down. Order and efficiency seemed to be slipping in areas like this. It made their job somewhat easier, but more unpredictable.

“Better make sure no one else is hiding out.”

"doing okay," he said as he pulled himself together. he was pleased with how quickly lam got to apprehending the grunt on the ground. "i'll take a look around."[break][break]

peering into the back of the van, it painted a clearer picture. [break][break]

haoyu carefully opened the doors so he could scoop up a very small nest, one that he cradled in his elbow. inside were three baby pidgeys, recently hatched. one was shiny. "this makes more sense," he mused. pidgeys were not high value pokemon to poach - not that he'd voice the thought aloud to lam - but a shiny would be worth grunt time. "these guys must be desperate for money to go through such an involved operation for one wild, shiny baby pokemon." should he expect more of this kind of trouble? was lilycove going to become a hub for low tier criminal activity?

"Good, that guy really came barreling atcha." With the grunt secured and slumped against the body of the truck, Peaches watched him with the most menacing eye a psyduck could manage.[break][break]
which...wasn't much, admittedly. but the psychic damage she could inflict was its own special deterrent.[break][break]
while haoyu when around to open up the van, lam turned back to the poor pidgey they'd seen struggling against those nets. "poor thing," he clicked his tongue. it had been discarded carelessly when the skirmish broke out. its wings fluttered in a panic as lam lifted it - flailing to get free until it realized that he was treating it with gentle hands to untangle it.[break][break]
"what does?" he asked the other, still cooing at the pidgey in his hands and smoothing at the sides of its head and cheeks.[break][break]
he immediately frowned, though, at the sight of the little nest. "No good..." there was an immediate instinct to snatch them all up and cradle them in the nest of his arms before building them their own special pidgey hutch. "do you think we should keep an eye out for others who might be in on this?" a poaching ring right in the heart of lilycove was the last thing either of them needed.[break][break]
"is back up on the way?"

lam took gentle care of the pidgey and the eggs. it brought a smile to haoyu's face.[break][break]

"there are officers coming to transport and book them. i don't mind waiting for them here, if you want to get those pokemon out of here." it wasn't protocol, but it was also clear these pokemon were actually wild. these guys weren't so much poachers as grunts taking pokemon out of regulation based on the abusive treatment of the bird and the stolen eggs. it was a crime, all the same. [break][break]

but it also meant the officers would take the birds as evidence at first, then release them to the wild. which would make them susceptible to further abuse from rocket. he had no way of knowing if a poaching ring was really starting up... but they could at least protect the set of pokemon right here. "you can take these guys away and set them up for success better than re-releasing before they can defend themselves will. i won't say a word about it."

His head tilted at Haoyu before his stare flickered down to the pidgey nest in his arms. The gaggle of them with their little downy-soft heads and expectant eyes. It was a shame, the way they were plucked prematurely from the pidgeot that had been nurturing them. “It would definitely be less stressful for them...” he reasoned–as if he needed all that much justification to bend those rules.[break][break]
Lam was a sucker, it was obvious how easily he softened at the sight of their little, peeping beaks. They’d started up after the commotion had passed, and safety seemed imminent. Little, bright chirps as the shiny one’s lime-feathered head poked up higher than the rest to blink curiously at the older man across from Lam.[break][break]
“You sure it won’t come back to bite you?” he continued, however, as he looked back up at Haoyu. “I don’t need you taking the fall for my absconding with them.” Peaches had waddled over, nudging against his leg as she peered up at the nest. “If you need extra ammunition, I can leave Peaches with you until then, and you can drop her off later.” The psyduck looked affronted that he’d make her work longer, an irritable titter burbling from her bill.
